Construction

Construction began on the REFHYNE 2 project at the end of 2024, at the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rheinland, with close collaboration from project partners Linde and ITM. The hydrogen produced by the 100 MW electrolyser will be used within the refinery itself in existing refinery operations.

In parallel with the detailed technical work to implement the electrolyser, an experienced research and dissemination team will lead a campaign to validate the electrolyser performance in the field, extract technical lessons learnt and then develop techno-economic analysis which underpins clear conclusions on the environmental, societal, and policy implications of rapid electrolyser scale up.

This will be disseminated throughout the project, to increase confidence in and acceptance of hydrogen technologies.  Stay up to date with the REFHYNE 2 project reports by exploring the Resources page.
